A soothing urban oasis in the midst of bustling Lombard Street, Alive! takes healthful dining to a sophisticated new level. Specializing in raw, vegetarian, animal-free cuisine using the freshest, highest-quality local and seasonal produce, the restaurant was awarded Best Raw Food in San Francisco by SF Weekly.

Clean, lively flavors are the hallmark of this distinctive cuisine. “It’s food that’s healthy, well-balanced and delicious, prepared as fresh as possible,” says owner and executive chef Leland Jung. In keeping with raw food’s core philosophies, most of the dishes on the menu are prepared without being heated above 118 degrees, to preserve optimal nutritional value and promote healthful digestion. The restaurant does not serve meat or any animal products (including dairy and honey), as well as wheat or grains.

Restaurant Design

The interior design of the restaurant was conceived after a consultation with a feng shui expert. Muted olive and sage tones on the wall form a tranquil backdrop for the simple, minimal Asian-inspired table accessories: celadon vases, flickering red votives, and bamboo mats. Padded bench seating creates intimacy, while abstract light fixtures with plant-like forms echo the organic theme. The focus of the space lies on two oversized pieces of wall art: a backlit abstract textile panel created by Jung himself, and a nine-panel canvas by a local graphic artist consisting of hand-painted Japanese papers applied in layers to form organic shapes.

The garden is a true retreat from urban life. Decking of sustainable ipé wood, redwood fencing, and an arching canopy of plum trees create shelter for a small grouping of teak tables and chairs. Japanese maple, bamboos, camellias, ferns, and vines form an eclectic yet soothing planting scheme.

The restaurant received perfect scores of 100 for cleanliness from the Department of Public Health for the last two years.
